Minutes BFACT Council Meeting

at CBC Friday 12 August 2011 commencing at 5.30pm

1. Present

Roy Nixon (President), Rebecca Plush (Vice President), Emlyn Williams (Treasurer),  Ian Dalziel (Capital), Val Brockwell (Secretary).

2. Apologies

Bruce Crossman, Gordon Henderson, John Yoon

3. Confirmation of Previous Minutes

The minutes of the meeting of 24/6/2011 accepted (RP, ID).

4. Business Arising

The President advised that the amount of $1035.00 had been paid to the VBA for those team members who attended the Melbourne ANC Victory Dinner.

4. Presidents Report

The President advised 

  1.  A major reconstruction of events will occur in the ABF calendar.
  2. The President’s Meeting was held in Melbourne during the ANC. The main two issues were insurance and revision of the ANC timetable. GNOT Convenor, John Brockwell, addressed the meeting in relation to a proposal that the States should revert to control of GNOT regions.

5. Treasurers Report

The Treasurer will produce annual financial reports. He will seek advice about de-registering from the GST.

6. Tournament Secretary’s Report.

Peter Kahler spoke to his written report.

(i) GNOT Selection Trial (Gala Pairs) and BFACT AGM

The date of the Spring Nationals has been changed resulting in a clash with BFACT’s Gala Pairs and AGM. The Committee decided therefore to switch the Gala Pairs/AGM to Sunday 16 October i.e. one week earlier. PK will prepare publicity but, in his absence overseas, the event needs publicity beforehand and around the clubs.

There was further discussion on the following tournament matters:

(ii) Open Butler Pairshas been changed to the ACT Swiss Butler Pairs Championship, (two qualifying spots for the Open Team Trials).  The dates are the same, Tuesday nights 2-25 October. Acquire Honour Board.

(iii) Women’s Butler Pairs is now the ACT ANC  Category Pairs Championship (Open, Seniors, Mens, Mixed and Juniors categories). First pair in any category gets $100 subsidy , and second $50. The dates are the same, Thursday nights 24 November to 8 December.

(iv) State Open Teams and Presidents Plate. No change proposed. PK will post regulations.(v) Next Years Calendar

CBC Tournament Secretary, Niek van Vucht, will soon provide a draft.

(vi) Open Teams Qualifying Spots

Swiss Butler pairs (2); CBC heat (6); South Canberra Bridge Club Heat (1); Last Train (2).  Request that South Canberra host, direct, etc. as a contribution to BFACT and suggest the date.

(vii) Handicap Championship

Replace Swiss Pairs Championship in March timeframe with ANC Handicap Championship (both under 300, both under 750, Open).

(viii)Honour Boards

PK would like to proceed with procuring the Honour Boards

(ix) Convening events.

PK thinks that the current system is not working well. There is a need to resolve.

7. BFACT Website

The new website is now “live” thanks to the work done by Emlyn Williams. The Committee expressed its heartfelt appreciation.

The Committee approved an offer from Earl Dudley to be Webmaster and felt that he would be excellent in the role.

8. Directors Courses run by Sean Mullamphy.

ID advised the dates for the two courses – 24/25 September 2011.

The Congress Directors Course, for those who have passed the Club Level Directors Course Examination, will be on the Saturday 24th.

The Club Level Directors Course for those who wish to learn the Laws of Bridge will be on the Sunday 25th September.

Suggestions for advertising the courses included the new BFACT site, flyers, announcements by Sean before play and a notice on the CBC TV screen.

9. Youth Bridge.

The Committee thanked John Yoon for his pre-circulated report.

The topics covered:

Gateway Program; Schools Bridge; Sapphire Coast Congress; ANU Bridge Club.  John invites anyone with ideas, concerns etc. to contact him.

10. Sub to Presidents re cost sharing of global management and professional liability insurance document.

The President spoke to the pre-circulated document. The ABF can contribute $20,000. The Committee confirmed that BFACT would pay its premium - $650 and recommend an increase in affiliation fees to partly cover this cost.

11. Any Other Business

There is the likelihood that we will need a director to run the last round of the Inter Club Teams on Saturday 27 August at South Canberra.

Gordon Henderson  will most likely direct proceedings. VB to organise

12. BFACT AGM Sunday 16 October 2011

The Notice of Meeting inviting agenda items to be circulated at least 21 days prior. An increase of 50 cents in affiliation fees will be an agenda item.

Motion: That the AGM approve an increase of 50 cents so that affiliation fees will then be $7.50.  Prop EW/2nd RP.

13 Date of Next Meeting

The next BFACT Meeting will be Friday 30th September 2011 at CBC.

The meeting closed at 7.00pm.
