2008 ANC OPEN TEAMS SELECTION
QUALIFYING BUTLER PAIRS EVENT

Timings

The event will be conducted from 7.30 pm on the five Tuesdays:

  • 4 Mar 2008

  • 11 Mar 2008

  • 18 Mar 2008

  • 25 Mar 2008

  • 1 Apr 2008

Venue

Canberra Bridge Club, 6 Duff Place, Deakin, ACT.

Eligility

All current financial members of a bridge club affiliated to BFACT will be eligible to play and may qualify for the final.

Other players may be admitted to play at the discretion of BFACT and may qualify for the final subject to their ability to meet the criteria (attached) to represent the ACT.

Other players may be admitted to play at the discretion of BFACT but will not be eligible to qualify for the final and will be “non-contending”.

Pairs not intending to play in the final shall indicate this intention before play starts.  Once electing to be “non-contending”, a pair may not change that election.  A “contending” pair may only withdraw from the final for valid medical or personal reasons.

Entry

Pre-entry is required by 3 pm on 3 Mar 08 to enable the movement to be determined.

Late entries will be accepted at the discretion of the BFACT Tournament Secretary.  Given the importance of the event, late entries will not be accepted where the integrity of the event cannot be maintained.

Format

The event will be played as a Butler pairs event with 12 pairs qualifying for the final.

Pairs will be seeded by the BFACT Tournament Secretary in conjunction with the Tournament Director.

The detailed format will be determined by the BFACT Tournament Secretary in conjunction with the Tournament Director based on the number of entries.  The objective will be to create the most equitable event with all pairs playing all other pairs in the field, or if split into North – South and East- West fields, all pairs in the other half of the draw.

The detailed format will be published after entry closes and before the event commences.

Qualification

The top 12 “contending” pairs will qualify for the final.

If the field is split into North – South and East- West fields, the top 6 “contending” NS and EW pairs will qualify for the final.

Scoring

Calculation of datums

A datum will be calculated for each board by omitting the highest and lowest table scores in each direction so that at 80 percent of the scores (rounding down) are used, finding the average of the remaining scores and rounding to the nearest multiple of 10.  The score of each pair will be converted to the IMP Scale according the Laws of Duplicate Bridge 1997.

An upper limit (calculated by multiplying the number of boards played against each pair by 8) of IMPs will apply for each match.  There will be no limit to negative IMPS.

Total IMP scores (after adjustment) will be cumulated for each pair to determine rankings in the event as a whole.

All posted scores will be provisional until data entry has been verified.  Scores may be amended with the agreement of both pairs until the publication of verified scores (generally, the following day), subject to the Laws of Duplicate Bridge 1997.

Breaking Ties

Only critical ties will be broken by removing any adjustment to the score, then the higher total ABF playoff points, then higher total master points then toss of the coin.

Conditions of Contest

Regulations

The event will be played under the Laws of Duplicate Bridge 1997, Australian Bridge Federation regulations, BFACT regulation and these Regulations.  Where any of these conflict, priority will be given in order of listing.

Entry Fee

The entry fee set by the Canberra Bridge Club includes a $3 administration and master point fee payable to BFACT.

Substitution

A player is entitled to a substitute for up to one third of all sessions to remain eligible for the championship.

As far as possible, a substitute should be of a similar standard to the one being substituted.  An inequitable substitute may be subject to a VP penalty assessed by the Tournament Director.

It is the responsibility of the player who is unavailable to find a substitute.  Where special circumstances exist, the Canberra Bridge Club manager may assist in finding substitutes.

Systems

Any system complying with ABF System and BFACT Tournament regulations may be played.  Each pair is required to make available two identical completed Standard ABF System Cards.

Slow Play

The time allowed for the commencement of the last board will be advised by the Tournament Director based on the number of boards.  A grace period of 5 minutes will be allowed for each pair once in the event.  Thereafter, each offending pair shall be penalized 1 VP for each board not completed.

Appeals

Appeals against the Tournament Director’s rulings must be notified in writing within 30 minutes of the posting of results at the end of the session.  The appeal will be conducted in accordance with the BFACT Tournament Regulations.

The Appeals Committee will be appointed by the BFACT Tournament Secretary, or in his absence, by a suitable BFACT Committee Member appointed by the President of BFACT.

Unexpected Events

The Tournament Director may take whatever action necessary to maintain the integrity of the tournament where events occur outside the scope of these regulations.

Master Points

Master points will be awarded at Grade B, as a State Championship event.
